Cannabis Storage Tips and Tricks
Hey folks! So, you’ve become a true connoisseur of cannabis (or Canna-seur if you will) and accumulated a vast trove of sticky icky in a variety of forms. Now the question is: where and how will you stash your mighty pile of electric lettuce to keep it as fresh and functional as possible? Well never fear friends and neighbors, we’ve got you covered because this week’s blog post is all about the best methods to store your ganja. So, let’s break down the different types of cannabis products you might have and how best to keep them as potent and flavour full as possible.
Flower
First off, we’ll start with how best to store your plain ol’ flower. You might have noticed a lot of the flower you can buy on the regulated market has a moisture pack of some branded variety kicking around in the package alongside the flower. The reason for this is because the moisture pack both gives and takes moisture from the flower, allowing it to maintain it’s current degree of moisture content for an extended period of time. This way one can hopefully avoid things like mold (which can occur when there’s too much moisture) or dryness (which occurs when there’s not enough moisture…obviously). After opening your new bag of bud, these two things are the most important things to look out for as they can not only ruin the quality of the experience but also can be a very real health hazard in the case of mold. Now, once you have enjoyed a bit of your perfectly moist, mold free weed, you might need to store it for a little while between sessions. In this case, you want to make sure to store your bud in a sealed container (like a mason jar or stash jar) while keeping it out of direct sunlight and in a cool space. Sunlight and oxygen can cause chemical degradation in the weed, which causes it to turn yellow and lose a lot of its flavour and potentially its potency.
“But Brynn,” you say with indignation in your voice, “my cannabis didn’t come with a moisture pack, or I lost it, and my weed is dry, what do I do now?”. Well readers first and foremost I ask that you don’t get indignant with me, I’m emotionally fragile. To answer your question though, there are a couple of different things you can do to revitalize your weed and make sure it stays moist and terpene rich. One method is to simply buy some moisture packs and to have them on hand. They can be found in dispensaries, some convenience stores and are readily available online. IN FACT, you can find them available to order on our accessory website in a variety of forms. However, if you (like me) are in a semi constant state of watching your money disappear into the aether, there is also the old orange peel trick, which is exactly what it sounds like: take a sliver of orange peel and seal it inside whatever container you’re using for your weed. It will perform many of the same functions as the moisture pack, however not to the same degree of efficiency and not for a prolonged time as leaving it in there can actually result in mold growth if left for too long. It’s best to only leave the orange peel in there for a few hours at most to avoid issues.
These tips apply to pre-rolls for the most part as well. One can also purchase humidors for their pre-roll and blunts that provide an extra bit of peace of mind.
Edibles/Beverages
As far as edibles and beverages are concerned, you can largely store them as you would regular beverages and snacks (albeit out of the reach of children). You want to avoid direct sunlight and keep them in a cool place to avoid the beverages turning lukewarm and the edibles melting into a hideous mess. Aside from that, you’re good!
Vapes/Concentrates
Last but not least, we’ll talk about vape carts and concentrates. Vapes (both carts and disposables) should be kept out of direct sunlight to prevent the distillate/resin/rosin from losing its potency and flavour due to UV exposure. Also don’t store them anywhere where heat radiation is going to be a thing, this can lead to clogging, leaking as well as a loss in flavour and potency. Concentrates should be stored in a cool space to maintain its integrity. You might notice we store ours in a fridge here at Circa 1818; this is ideal for storing concentrates for the short and long term, just remember to let them return to room temperature prior to consuming.
