Get To Know the Man Behind the Brand

Circa 1818 Cobourg

Brandon Hartmann, Founder + Operator

Born and raised in Cobourg, Brandon has always been outgoing. Even as a child, he would go out of his way to form connections and build relationships with everyone he met. This tendency to want to reach out and meaningfully interact with people coupled with his love for his hometown eventually led him to want to create his own business and brand that could represent the best parts of Cobourg and Northumberland.

Being of First Nations descent, Brandon was working as a consultant for indigenous cannabis stores located on reservation land when cannabis was finally legalized for regulated sale in Canada. He knew that it was time for him to take the next big step towards his dream: His experience working with indigenous entrepreneurs had already equipped him with the knowledge he needed, now he just had to wait for lady luck to shine a light on him.

Soon Ontario started to run a lottery to grant cannabis retail licenses and Brandon experienced setbacks as he watched others win the lottery and start their cannabis retail journey. He began to worry that his dreams were dashed.

Flash forwards a bit and Ontario had opened cannabis retail licenses to everyone, allowing Brandon to finally move forward with his dream and bring Circa 1818 to life. Since then, Brandon has grown Circa 1818 into Cobourg’s premier cannabis retailer, helping to break down the stigma surrounding cannabis while also working to improve the lives of the people of Cobourg and Northumberland.

A Family Company

They say no person is an island, and Brandon is no exception. He’d be the first to tell you, he couldn’t have gotten this far without the support of his loving family. They not only helped to build the store and get it up and running but have continued to have a presence in the store, using their incredible skill sets to help to grow the Circa 1818 brand.

His wife Emily has been a big part of the secret sauce to Brandon’s success, taking time from her incredibly busy career as Hospital Manager at Northumberland Hills Hospital to help to bring Brandon’s vision into focus. She is also working on her MBA through Western Ivey, striving to add to her already amazing list of achievements.

Part of being a family business is engaging with the community, and the Hartmann family aim to expand their brand while including as many local businesses as possible to help to keep Cobourg and Northumberland the best place in Ontario to live and thrive in.
