Strain Highlight: Gelato

Hey folks! We’re back for another strain highlight, where we talk about some of the most common (and uncommon) strains of cannabis you’ll encounter out in the wide world of weed, all in the name of sharing our love of the fabulous cannabis plant with the good people of Northumberland. This week, we’re going to be taking a quick look at a tasty treat of a strain that delights the tastebuds and cannabinoid receptors of happy stoners everywhere: Gelato.

The Origin

This delightful little guy was created by a breeder named Mario Guzman (aka Sherbinski) who was working for the Cookies brand crafting new strains to unleash upon their customers. He crossed a strain called Sunset Sherbet with an unconfirmed variety of Girl Scout Cookies (possibly Thin Mint Girl Scout Cookies). The result was a delicious hybrid flower that leans a bit to the “indicouch” side of things. There are several varieties of this strain, each of which has a numerical designation to differentiate it from its brethren. For example, the one I described above is referred to as Gelato #42. Why 42 you ask? I’m gonna boldly assume it’s a “Hitchhiker’s Guide to The Galaxy” reference. If you don’t know what that is, head to your local library and check it out, it’s a science fiction comedy classic. There was also a movie adaptation for those who don’t want to or can’t do thick novels.

Anyway, each of the varieties of Gelato sit at different points on the hybrid flower spectrum, giving the consumers the option of attaining different effects within the same relative flavour profile.

One might also find these buds under other names like Larry Bird or Barry Bonds, as always, it’s a good idea to check the label and/or ask a trusted bud tender if you aren’t sure what the genetic lineage of the weed you’re looking at is.

The Stats

This guy is considered a mid to high THC strain, with it regularly appearing at around 20-25 percent THC, which is enough to get your where you wanna go. Flavour wise, it’s best described as nutty with a hint of vanilla and fruit, which makes it a big hit with pot aficionados who prioritize good flavour. The different varieties (ie. Gelato #3, Gelato #33 etc.) all bring differing THC and CBD levels to the table as well as different effects, with some swinging a bit heavier into the indica or sativa sides of things. However, all of the different subtypes of this strain feature an approximation of the same flavour profile.

The flower itself features dense, green buds that are awash in orange pistils. That along with an aroma that hints at its scrumptious flavour makes this strain an all rounder that both old and new school smokers love to love.

And that is a very basic rundown of the wonderous Gelato strain in all of its myriad forms. It’s worth trying all of the different types of Gelato out there in the wild, because as they say, variety is the spice of life!
