Strain Highlight: Jack Herer

Jack Herer

Most strains are named after some feature of the plant, whilst some are presumably named vis a vis the time tried method of stringing random words together (looking at you spaceflight superstar #11). Sometimes though, a strain is given a name in order to honor a person that has had an impact on the culture we love…. sort of like naming a bridge after someone, except with less concrete and ribbon cutting. One such named strain tends to stand tall amongst others, a good thing since it shares names with one of the great advocates for the decriminalization of cannabis. I’m speaking of course, of the much sought-after Jack Herer strain, named after the author and cannabis activist.

Who was Jack?

Jack Herer was an American cannabis enthusiast who loudly and frequently advocated for the legalization of cannabis. He did this not just because he was a super chill dude who wanted to blaze in peace (although, that too I guess), but instead because he understood the value of cannabis in all respects; as not only a medicine and recreational tool but also how it could be used as a sustainable means of replacing or supplementing much of the waste inherent in our productive processes. If you’ve heard about the many uses of hemp as a building material, source of paper etc., it’s because of the efforts of this man and others like him. his book “The Emperor Wears No Clothes” is a great book about the many uses of cannabis and the morally questionable, greed induced reasoning for maintaining its criminalization. He sadly passed away in 2010, but his legacy lives on in this potent and tasty flower.

So, how is the strain?

A strain named after someone who did as much good work for the cannabis movement as Jack did have to be of an almost legendary quality, and Jack Herer (the strain, not the man) is some seriously good bud. It has an earthy aroma of pine needles with a splash of citrus and is delightfully smooth to smoke.  It was apparently bred from a combination of Northern Lights (another classic) and Shiva Skunk, making it a sativa dominant hybrid that keeps the user upbeat and cerebral while still providing a nice calm body buzz that can potentially help with pain and anxiety. If you have an old school cannabis pallet, this plant is the one for you, with a nice balance between the physical and mental affects.

So, next time you’re out selecting your next bud, keep an eye out for Jack Herer so you can participate in the time-honored tradition of smoking a joint in honor of someone who helped to make the dream of legalized cannabis a reality.
