Cannabis and Exercise

Hey folks! I hope everyone is having a wonderful week and enjoying the slowly but surely improving weather. We talk a lot about the potential wellness benefits of consuming cannabis and how it can help to make just about every experience better. One pastime that seems to have benefited from the addition of cannabis is the age-old tradition of getting swole. That’s right, it’s time to talk about cannabis and exercising.

Getting “Ripped”

Full disclosure, the closest I come  to exercise nowadays is when I break a sweat eating too much fried foods, so we won’t be drawing from my own experiences from this one but instead the experiences of some of our friends and customers as well as the opinions of industry experts. Since this verges tantalizingly close to being medical information, friendly reminder that we aren’t doctors or medical experts and everything we say should be observed with that in mind.  Anyway, on with the learnin!

There’s a misconception that stoners are lazy people. This is certainly untrue as some of the hardest working people I know smoke weed (looking at you Brandon). Anyone who is a chronic smoker can tell you that cannabis can just as often have an energizing effect as it can a sedative one, it all depends on the strain you’re consuming. An indica strain will indeed put you “indacouch”, so a nice sativa strain would be the best recommendation for when its time to get fit.

Many people are starting to get on the stoner-cise bandwagon, which effectively involves imbibing cannabis in their preferred format prior to hitting the gym. A lot of the people who do so report improved pain management during their workout as well as a better ability to focus on the particulars of the workout they’re currently engaged in. On top of that, it raises their overall enjoyment of the activity they’re doing (which to be fair, is not exclusive to working out. I once thoroughly enjoyed an entire episode of “Married with Children” without ever actually turning on the T.V. ).  Primarily, it seems to be the pain management bit that people benefit from the most, since it helps to balm the wound that is an overworked muscle.

Sounds like a great way to stay fit and get stoned!

Correct you are internal voice, it’s a time-tested method of benefiting from the many wonderful properties of cannabis. It’s also becoming quite popular to imbibe cannabis after a workout to help relax and recover from the bodily stress of pumping iron.  Thanks not only to the analgesic (pain fighting) qualities of cannabis but also the anti-inflammatory properties of many minor cannabinoids, working out has never been more tempting. I mean I still probably won’t do it, but knowing that weed can enhance the experience means that one day, maybe, I will.

Even if you’re not the type to hit the gym there are plenty of other physical activities that cannabis improves, like taking long walks while stoned. This is a great way to look after your overall health while improving your appreciation for the natural and architectural beauty of the world around us. Cobourg in particular is a beautiful town with a waterfront that is second to none, and with summer right around the corner, it’s going to be a great time to flare up a joint and get some cardio in!
